What Does this transvaginal Ultrasound Result Mean?
I just had a papsmear then a transvaginal ultrasound (the one with a probe -) they found a 12 cm cyst in my left ovary - I am go to go in Tuesday for another ultra sound with and without contrast, blood work and I just need to know what this means - Is it just a cyst or is it cancer?
Hello, Thanks for trusting Healthcaremagic! I have gone through your query and I can understand your concerns.
We can not predict the nature of the cyst depending only on the size of the size of the swelling. The good thing is that most of the ovarian cysts are benign and malignant cysts are very rare compared to benign one. You have to do blood investigations like CA-125 assay which is a tumor marker for ovarian cancer. Your current USG does not mention features of malignacy(cancer) like calcification and ascitis. In case of any suspicion a biopsy may be needed for definite diagnosis. I'm of the opinion that it will be benign(non cancerous) one. Regards. Wishing you good health Dr.Shinas Hussain
Hi, I had gone through your question and understand your concerns. Ultrasound findings can not very clearly differentiate that whether its just a cyst of a cancer. Cyst is basically just collection of fluid its not cancer. If your Ultrasound report is showing that cyst has debris and its complicated than it could be cancerous. Your treating physician will decide further workup is needed or not.
Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate to ask. I will be happy to answer your questions.
Wishing you good health
